What is the first thing you think of when you think of wolves? Many people think of the lonely sounding howl the wolves often make in the dark of night. It's a song that rings through the air and can cause fear in animals and humans alike. Imagine a place that provides a home for unwanted and abandoned wolves, wolf dogs and other wild animals. These are animals that have either been bred in captivity and held privately as pets, or who have been injured or orphaned and have found their way to Wolfsong for rehabilitation purposes. There is such a place, it's called Wolfsong Ranch. If not for Wolfsong, these animals would end up in shelters, be put to sleep, or left to fend for themselves in the desert.
Wolfsong Ranch got its name from the wolf songs that once penetrated the quiet nights not so long ago. Wolfsong creates an environment, which brings balance and healing to the animals living there. They preserve the habitats needed by these various species and provide education and experimental learning opportunities for members and visitors. The staff at Wolfsong answer hundreds of rescue calls a year, office advice on animal related matters and utilizes their network of members and friends to provide support for wolves worldwide.
Located near the Arizona and New Mexico border in the San Simon Valley, Wolfsong is situated in an area so rural there are few neighbors that walk on two legs. Wolfsong is situated between the Chiracahua and Peloncillo Mountains where once the Chiracahua Indians lived and notorious outlaws roamed the county. It is approximately 40 miles SW of Lordsburg and is part of a large area once referred to as the badlands.
Wolfsong also offers horseback tours of the wildlife sanctuary and of famous Native American sites and outlaw hideouts for the Clanton Gang, Johnny Ringo, and Curly Bill. You can ride for an hour or two or make a complete day of it and experience dinner by a campfire and swapping stories under the stars or simply a great lunch during the noon hour. Call or write in advance to schedule walking or horseback tours. All recommended donations for the tours and rides are used to feed and care for all the animals of the Wolfsong Foundation.
The owners and staff at Wolfsong Ranch welcome visitors to their facility to see the great work they are doing to help preserve the quality of life for the wolves and other wildlife that are housed at Wolfsong. Wolfsong is a non-profit organization located on 440 acres in the southern Hidalgo County "bootheel" of New Mexico.
Interested individuals can join the Wolfsong family and help support the wildlife through membership fees or adoption of Wolfsong residents and through monetary donations or through donations of food, building materials, fencing, office supplies, tools and first aid supplies.
Take a drive down to Wolfsong and make memories to last you a lifetime. It's a different way of life and a chance to get back to nature. It's a trip you won't soon forget.
