Hidalgo County Fair - A Family Event
The Hidalgo County Fair, one of the biggest events takes place at the fairgrounds in Lordsburg, the third or fourth weekend of August. This annual event brings people from the outlying communities together with their city neighbors. As fair officials put the finishing touches on the county fair, the excitement escalates with each passing day as fair time draws near. There is much fun and excitement to be had! So many activities are planned for our Hidalgo county residents. Youngsters and those not so young in age, but still young at heart, will be exhibiting their baking, sewing, canning and talents in arts and crafts. Exhibits will also include the vegetables and flowers raised by our talented gardeners. Entry divisions include 4-H, youth and adult. There is a category for everyone. Everyone is encouraged to bring their goods to town and place them in competition.
Early Friday morning, the center of activity is the livestock show ring. 4-H and FFA boys and girls show their livestock. This is the culmination of several months' work as our young people exhibit their pigs, steers, and lambs. These young people have put many long hours and a lot of work into their livestock projects. These youngsters are a sight to see as they show their animals and their courtesy and good sportsmanship is always exceptional.
Following the exhibiting of livestock is the Pee Wee Showmanship Contest. This provides the younger folks who are not old enough to be in 4-H and FFA a chance to get involved. A fun time is experienced by all.
Friday afternoon beginning at 5 o'clock the Fair Parade can be seen on Railroad Avenue. Wide arrays of entries provide much for your viewing enjoyment.
The Junior Rodeo provides spectators an opportunity to see our young cowboys and cowgirls at their best. Young people from our community as well as neighboring counties participate in this event which is scheduled for Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
